BENGALURU: Online marketplace Flipkart said that it holds 27-28% of the smartphone market in India across online and offline channels, making it the largest retailer of smartphones in the country.
The online marketplace, which has launched close to 40 exclusive smartphone models since January, will continue its focus on growing this category over the coming months.
“Smartphones is one of the biggest category for us and we will continue our focus on this. In July alone, we have launched three exclusive models on the platform including Motorola, Panasonic and Samsung,” said Ayyappan R, senior director and head of mobile phones at Flipkart.
In the January to March quarter, data provided by technology market research company Counterpoint said that Flipkart had a clear lead over rival Amazon online in the sale of smartphones with a 57% share of the market. Amazon India’s shares for the corresponding period stood at 27%. Given the launch of the Redmi 4A in the April to June quarter on the Amazon India platform, the ratio is expected to tilt in the Seattle-based ecommerce giant’s favour. Xiaomi accounts for close to 50% of the sales on the online channel.
“One in three smartphone sale happens online,” said Tarun Pathak, associate director at Counter point Research, adding that the marketshare of the April to June quarter were yet to be compiled based on the pre-GST sales and exclusive launches during the period.
According to industry analysts ET spoke to, smartphones and apparel continue to be the strong points of Flipkart which also owns vertical players Myntra and Jabong. Amazon India has managed to keep up with Flipkart with a stronger focus on fashion, appliances and FMCG, where Flipkart does not have a play yet.
